Project description

The DANUBE4all project, through the development of the Danube Basin Restoration Action Plan will demonstrate an efficient and economically viable approach to restoring freshwater ecosystems and ensuring their sustainable use within the Danube River Basin. The focus will be on reducing the impact of artificial barriers, restoring and protecting biodiversity and ecosystems, protecting areas from floods, developing measures to mitigate the impact of droughts on freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, and sustainable management of river sediments. The Action Plan will address the improvement of ecological status, biodiversity, and the connectivity of ecosystems within the Danube Basin. The implementation of concrete activities is planned at three demonstration sites in three countries, located in the Upper, Middle, and Lower Danube, including the Danube Delta. It will link ecological and economic values and enable the engagement of citizens and all relevant stakeholders. Nature-based solutions focusing on the restoration and sustainable use of freshwater ecosystems will be applicable throughout the entire basin and five assiciated regions, through concrete replication steps.

Data

Within the Danube4all project, data are collected on:

  • River barriers
  • River connectivity – longitudinal and lateral
  • Habitats for biota
  • Nature-based solutions (NBS) for improving the condition of water and restoring the Danube and its tributaries
  • Socio-economic aspects (the role of local communities, fisheries, ecosystem services)

Data is stored within partner institutions and the joint project database, and after processing and validation, it will be made available through official project reports, scientific publications, and open data repositories, in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).
