PROJECT DESCRIPTION

SUBPROJECT DESCRIPTION:
We will study the structural differences between the isolated cell walls (CW) and their components from different plant species, and especially homogenized plant tissue as a basis for new materials. We will study how differences in chemical composition, structure and mechanical properties of CW, affect the application. We will combine the plant material with bio-compatible and bio-degradable synthetic materials and study the properties of such composites. Using enzyme engineering we will improve the degradability of CW components in order to improve his properties for biomaterials application. We will study the interaction of manufactured composite materials with biological systems. We will study the biocompatibility of the obtained materials: in vitro compatibility tests with mammalian cell cultures, a simulated biological degradation, examination of the potential for regeneration of human tissue.
