PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Continuous degradation of aquatic ecosystems, disturbance and destruction of habitats, as well as uncontrolled exploitation of fish populations are the main factors for endangering fish fauna. In addition, inadequate stockings, as well as the spread of invasive species, further affect the composition and condition of native fish species. These factors influence the changes in ichthyofaunistic diversity in the territory of Serbia, as well as the reduction of genetic species of high conservation and economic importance. This project enabled the determination of the reference and actual state of ichthyofaunistic diversity, the precise and efficient determination of the status of vulnerability of individual taxa, the determination of biodiversity hot-spots and areas of vital importance for the preservation and restoration of fish populations. The assessment of the composition, structure and condition of fish fauna, their processing and interpretation can serve as a basis for establishing a program for monitoring changes in populations, communities and aquatic ecosystems in the territory of Serbia, which is a prerequisite for successful implementation of the measures envisaged by the Resolution on the policy of biodiversity conservation in Serbia. Also, estimating the rate of rational exploitation allows long-term sustainable use of fish resources. Bearing in mind the modern multipurpose use of aquatic ecosystems, the obtained results can serve as the information basis for the planning and development of an integrated water resources management strategy of Serbia, with the basic goal of preserving their ecological status in accordance with the proclaimed principles of the European Water Directive.
