Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (ES)

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences is composed of two independent research groups which closely cooperate on the monitoring of heavy metals in soil, surface waters and wetlands.

Plant Nutrition Group focuses on nutrient acquisition in the rhizosphere and utilization by plants as well as on plant responses to mineral stresses, from nutrient deficiency to the excess of essential and other elements, with a special emphasis towards the physiological roles of silicon in stress mitigation.

Group for ichthyology and aquaculture conducts ecological and ecophysiological research of fish populations and their environment, fish biochemistry, research and monitoring of the invasive introduced fish species, fish population genetics, geometric morphometry of fish, fish histopathology, genotoxicity, heavy metal accumulation in fish, conservation of the endangered fish species, ecology of piscivorous birds, fishery management, socioeconomic aspects of the fish resources utilization, aquaculture, development of scientific studies and management programs for fishery resources.
