• Structure-function relationship in plant cell walls: molecular arrangements, interlinking of the polymers.

• Structural studies of lignins: lignin model compounds, isolated lignins.

In vitro systems: mechanisms of lignin formation, artificial assembly of cell walls.

• Nanostructural studies of new compounds, including those based on plant cell walls and related polymers, for possible applications in biomedicine, biomaterials and biofuels.

• Reactions (activity, isoenzyme profile) of enzymes (peroxidases, polyphenol oxidases) involved in synthesis of polyphenolic compounds in the cell walls. Reactions of antioxidant enzymes and structural changes in cell wall macromolecules under stress conditions.

• Development of mathematical models in spectroscopy of biological molecules of different complexity (phenolic compounds, lignin, proteins), in solution and in microscopic imaging. Application as a structural tool.

• Chemistry and biological activities of natural products.
